What is a “sob sister?”
Newspapers at the turn of the 20th century began to hire female reporters for one reason: to get “a woman’s perspective” of news and events. Consequently, these women journalists–the pioneering women of journalism–were called “sob sisters” because of their expectancy to give a dramatic review of current issues.
