Rap battle, for real?

The mayor of Corpus Christi, Joe Adame, is apparently getting criticism for appearing in Michael White’s rap video (you might remember the video from the previous post as “Exhibit B”). That of course spawned this news story by the Caller Times, in which the rich, oblivious White people of Corpus conspired and started commenting about how White is a gang member. I mean, they guess, right? Cool! Close-mindedness!

Maybe the video is “profane” by the standards of the Kings Crossing crowd, but how often does public discourse about Corpus occur like this between its citizens? If anything, this has exposed exactly what Corpus is like beneath the veil of wealthy fat Republicans. The young generation of Corpus is a bunch of Michael Whites and I am glad it’s finally out there.

I made my own comment to the news story:

you know what–
a) i went to high school with michael white and he’s a smart kid. he’s not a “gang member.” though, you sure have made him out to be (proving that corpus is as close-minded as i expected). he’s opened for almost every big rap act that’s come to corpus. you should be glad someone in this city is good at something.

b) if anything, at least this has opened discourse about this city. we’ve been voted fattest and 2nd stupidest in the past year. at least someone is trying to spite the negativity.

c) the “profanity” you speak of is the same “profanity” we would hear on hot z 95 unedited. it’s 2010. get over it. why not tackle teen pregnancy? or is that not valid enough?

It’s not that I’m a big fan of either of these videos (cause….I’m not at all). It’s that I LOVE CORPUS (yes, I represent the 3-6-1….shucks) and I want great things for it, ya know? It all starts with one conversation, and maybe this is it.
