Blog is a funny word

I attended the BlogHer conference last week (BlogHer’s 6th year of existence). I’ve been wanting to go to the conference since I interviewed Elisa Camahort Page (co-founder, CEO) three years ago for a journalism assignment.
When I found out about blogher.com, I thought it was amazing, as I was convinced the Internet was the next civil rights frontier. BlogHer is why I started this very blog. Originally “Sob Sister” was called “WWWoman ESource” and it listed women’s organizations in Austin– from what I can remember. I also had a few podcasts of rape survivors telling their stories. I still have those . . .
I became “sob sister” because of the class I took called “Women and Journalism,” in which we studied the noteworthy sob sisters–Women like Nelly Bly, who, in her case, circled the world more quickly than 80 days and pretended to be insane in order to document the internal state of a mental institution. Sob sisters were women who exposed themselves to hell, who faked vulnerability, and did it all for the chance to tell a good story.
I remember I was shocked to find sobsister.com was an available domain name (if it weren’t for patriarchy where would I be? Wait . . . ).
Shortly after speaking with Camahort, I listed this blog in the BlogHer directory. Later it was listed on the blogroll of Feministing. I used to be more openly “feminisophical,” I admit. –Point is, when women at the conference asked me what I blog about, I didn’t really know what to say. Occasionally I’d mumble some crap about the intersection of women, design, and cats. A niche crowd, you all are, for sure.
Conference Highlights:
-Free tampons
-Free Play-Doh
-Free (excellent) food
-A woman wearing these heels (which have a secret special purpose)
-Inspiration (cheesy, I know)
But I used to love blogging! What happened! What am I doing! And if you say grad school I’ll smack you.
