“I don’t think I can get into that lane,” she said with her blinker on and her head rotating around her right shoulder. “These cars just keep coming and won’t let me in.”
“Can’t we just tell them who you are?”
At the end of the semester, Sarah Weddington invited me to have coffee with her sometime before I moved.
At 6 P.M. today I parked in front of her office on W 14th street. I had only been there once before and it was three years ago as a lowly NARAL intern; I was returning some fliers I designed for an event she was hosting.
But now I was parking out front and walking inside and sitting across from her at her desk and making jokes.
She drove us to a coffee shop that had a sign on the front that said, “Due to the holiday, we close at 8 P.M.”
She then inferred to me that our allotted time to discuss whatever matters were to be discussed would be until 8 P.M. And it was.
I could go into detail about all the wonderful things to say about how I feel after talking to someone so influential, but it’s not worth documenting literally. I can only restate something that I will never forget her telling me.
I asked her why she wanted to have coffee with me.
She said, “I am so proud of you and your generation.”
