A feminist in Las Vegas

Ever been to Vegas?

It’s where I have been for the past week.

I was warned of two things:

1) to chill out and realize I was going to see women exploited, regardless.

2) not to ruin the trip for everyone else.

My perception of Vegas was that provocatively dressed women would be everywhere; after all, I’ve only seen the movies. The radar should have gone off that, in fact, the stereotype was false. Most of the women you see are there with their partners, and they aren’t too young or too media-ideal. Most of the exploitation I witnessed took place in none other than Las Vegas advertising space, where the only two things you are really told to do are to be entertained, eat, and have sex.

There was a Gideon’s Bible in the hotel room.

The most unbelievable phenomenon is the access to prostitution, which is, contrary to popular belief, illegal within city limits. I’m not exactly sure just how the system works, but men stand in scattered lines tiptoeing the Vegas strip sidewalk and slapping down little trading cards on their hands; these cards bear naked prostitutes and a phone number, promising sex “direct to you” in the next 20 minutes.

The flicking sound made me upset after a while–Can’t compromise what you believe no matter where you are–Sometimes survival of the fittest will take down the fit.

One time I saw a woman flicking the cards.

Traitor.
