Feminism: it won’t even let you enjoy a good movie…

One of the things “white people like” are Wes Anderson movies. Well guess what, ya.
After what seemed like forever, I finally was able to view The Darjeeling Limited last night. I knew I would like it because I had heard the music from the film (a sitar player myself, I much enjoy what Westerners have deemed “world” music).

So I don’t know what it was. Bad celebratory wine at dinner? Bad vegetables? Was I running a fever?
All I could think about was that, holy shit, there are no positive images of women in this movie at all. Role call:
- The minority character=the Indian woman on the train who is “hot” and “wanted” by character, Jack. The only way this breezes by as not sexist is his parting bid of, “Thanks for using me.”
- The abandoning mother. Enough said.
- The pregnant wife who is abandoned for a spiritual journey.
After it was over, I turned to my male accomplice, who rather enjoyed it (he is also white), and asked him if he would have even considered watching it if it were three women going on a spiritual journey instead; “Wouldn’t it then be a chic flic?” I asked.
Of course, he threw up his hands and said nothing wins with me. But for real. The Darjeeling Limited is a dick flic. A good one, only because I’m white, but a dick flic.
