U.S. government, can you tell me about the birds and the bees now?

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention released a study last week–the first study of its kind–stating that 1 in 4 teenage girls have a sexually transmitted infection (the most common being genital warts-associated HPV).

That would have been 700 girls in my high school. That would have been 160 in my graduating class.

That is 3.2 million teenage girls in the United States.

Shedding a tear? Just abstain.

After all, that’s the petition we were made to sign when we were 12, when we also wore “DARE” shirts–and not for the sake of being ironic. And let’s stick vaccines into kids’ arms and not tell them what it’s for, or how they could ever get it.

Planned Parenthood Austin has organized the first Teen Sexual Health Conference, which will take place July 26 of this year, and will teach 12 to 17-year-old women everything they need to know to empower them…

and TO STAY ALIVE.

I think we are mature enough now to know, sweet land of liberty.
