A belated post about the International Day against Female Genital Mutilation

The UN described a plan to cut down the international occurrence of female genital mutilation Feb. 8, which unbeknownst to me was the International Day against Female Genital Mutilation (the significance of one date for this…unknown).

Supposedly, they will cut it (the crime…nice pun though, eh) 40% within the next 7 years.

First of all, 40% is less than half (just to emphasize the obvious). Second of all, 7 years to cut less than half of the occurrence of genital mutilation?

Rephrasing, the UN is willing to allow 60% of this insanity–VICTIM: WOMEN’S GENITALS– to go on until the year 2015.

My vagina doesn’t like the sound of that.

Meanwhile, this is what the World Health Organization can tell us about the problem itself:

WHO Female Mutilation Facts

Intriguing. Thanks for the info.

Fortunately, Everywoman TV can provide information some governments are not too hasty to hand out (7 years my ars):

that youtube video was really good, it raised a lot of interesting issues surrounding fgm. i don’t think i’ve heard of a better example of women being so completely subverted that they believe fgm is necessary to be a mature woman. it seems like fgm will be impossible to eradicate because it is so ingrained in the culture of those who practice it.

    i’m really haunted by this.

that’s a good point to say that it could be seen as a cultural attack–but honestly, it doesnt justify letting it happen. its either an attack on women is ok versus being friendly with the culture or attack on the culture and being friendly with women. if half the population is being persecuted, i dont think acting THAT subtle will wake up the population and say hey, this is wrong, unless someone is willing to put emphasis on it.
